During the Third Great Ninja War it was a proud and powerful clan because it had a technique capable of wiping out an entire village, created by its leader En no Gyōja. Thanks to it, the clan came to tip the balance of the war, but it also became a target, and many of its members died. They have a hidden village of their own and a small fort on Mount Katsuragi, surrounded by a barrier and a field full of traps.","lvl":1,"ep":"shippuden-145","pos":415},{"h":"The pact with the Third Hokage","t":"During the war, En no Gyōja made a pact with the Third Hokage: he declared the technique forbidden in exchange for Konoha protecting the clan whenever it needed. That is why Tsunade sends Naruto, Sakura, Sai and Yamato when a young woman of the clan is attacked. After the war, the clan was left weak, and En no Gyōja and the village elder disagreed on how to survive. The clan split: one part stayed in the Tsuchigumo village and a few followed En no Gyōja to Mount Katsuragi. The name alludes to a Japanese mythological creature shaped like a giant spider.","lvl":1,"ep":"shippuden-145","pos":415},{"h":"Hotaru, heir to the technique","t":"Hotaru is En no Gyōja's granddaughter and heir to the forbidden technique, which is engraved on her back. She is accompanied by Tonbee, a guardian of the clan, and seeks out Utakata, the Six-Tails' jinchūriki, to be her teacher. Neither is her father: Tonbee looks after her and Utakata teaches her reluctantly. Mist trackers are hunting Utakata because they believe he killed his own teacher; in fact, that teacher died by accident while trying to extract the beast from him. Hotaru would rather find another bearer than let the technique be erased.","lvl":1,"ep":"shippuden-147","pos":415},{"h":"Shiranami and the end of the arc","t":"That other bearer turns out to be Shiranami, leader of the bandits after the technique. He captures Hotaru, controls the Tsuchigumo villagers and uses her as a vessel to gather the natural energy the jutsu releases. The team defeats the bandits, Naruto beats Shiranami and Utakata contains Hotaru's overflowing chakra. She and Utakata set off together, but Pain ambushes him, and before he falls he leaves her a message with his bubbles asking her to go on living. The arc thus ties in with the Akatsuki's hunt for jinchūriki.","lvl":1,"ep":"shippuden-151","pos":415}],"characters":["hotaru","tonbee","en-no-gyoja"],"related":["chakra"],"reference":"Official series and chapter guides as reading context.
