That hole serves several purposes: it lets the user hold it with a finger without getting cut, thread wire through it and improve its flight. It is used mainly at range, in volleys, to distract, cover an angle, pin an opponent's clothing or force them to move where you want. In close combat it does little. It is part of basic aim training at the Academy: students practice against wooden targets, and clans known as good marksmen, like the Uchiha, hone it from childhood. An ordinary shuriken does not cut everything it touches or pierce chakra defenses: the result depends on the aim, chakra and strategy of whoever throws it.","lvl":0},{"h":"The shuriken's shadow","t":"In the Land of Waves, Sasuke throws a Fūma shuriken at Zabuza, who catches it in midair; but another was coming behind, hidden in the first one's shadow, and Zabuza has to jump to dodge it. That technique, Shadow Shuriken, rests on a simple principle: the opponent focuses on the visible projectile and does not see the one behind it. The play was double, too, because the second shuriken was Naruto transformed, who turns back in midair and throws a kunai to free Kakashi from the water prison. It is one of the first times Naruto and Sasuke pull off a plan together, and it shows that wits are worth more than the weapon.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-14","ep":"naruto-8","pos":14},{"h":"Shuriken clones","t":"During the invasion of Konoha, Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, faces Orochimaru inside a barrier. He throws a single shuriken and multiplies it in midair with the Shuriken Shadow Clone Jutsu: hundreds of real copies rain down on the opponent at once. It shows that the technique belongs to the user and not the weapon, because the object thrown is identical to any genin's. Sasuke, for his part, prefers to control trajectories: he ties his shuriken with wire and guides them with the Sharingan, as he does against Orochimaru in the Forest of Death and in other Part I fights.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-123","ep":"naruto-71","pos":123},{"h":"Trivia","t":"In real life there are two big families of shuriken: “hira shuriken”, flat discs or stars like the ones in the series, and “bō shuriken”, straight iron spikes that resemble senbon. The work adopts the flat star as the image of the ninja and leaves the spike to the needles. The center hole has a real basis too: it lightens the piece and steadies its flight. The anime also features absurd inventions, like a shuriken with so many points it cannot be held, or a giant rocket-powered one with a pilot tied to it who ends up dizzy from all the spinning.","lvl":0},{"h":"Variants and launchers","t":"Besides the basic model there are enormous stars, as long as an arm, carried on the back or stored in scrolls, which are also spun in the hand. The Demon Brothers hide a bladed chain in their gauntlets; in the Chūnin Exams, Tenten throws a large manji-shaped shuriken; in the Land of Birds they use three-pointed stars. In the Fourth War, Tenten moves on to eight-pointed stars, and Kumogakure's Toroi throws square shuriken of all sizes, some almost as big as he is, combined with his magnetic technique until he is sealed. In Pain's invasion, Tessen Togeito fires a half-moon loaded with stars that all fly out together when he pulls a chain.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-546","pos":546},{"h":"The shuriken's shape in other techniques","t":"The shuriken's silhouette reappears in techniques that use no metal. Naruto's Rasenshuriken, introduced during his Wind Style training, takes the shape of a great spinning wind shuriken. There are shuriken of sand, water, rock, paper (Konan's) and even crystal. In the Uchiha brothers' duel, Sasuke and Itachi open with a rain of shuriken that collide in midair with pinpoint precision, like a conversation between two marksmen who have always known each other. In the Fourth War, now revived, Hiruzen multiplies a giant shuriken once more against Obito and the Ten-Tails.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-639","pos":639}],"characters":["sasuke","itachi","hiruzen","tenten","naruto","boruto","sarada"],"related":["kunai","fuma-shuriken","alambre-ninja","kage-bunshin"],"reference":"Naruto, chapters 5–8 (training), 120–123 (Hiruzen against Orochimaru) and 14–16 (Land of Waves arc).","sources":[{"title":"Guía oficial de anime: Naruto y Shippuden","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/anime"}],"figures":[]}
