Naruto gets his after failing, in the episode that opens the series. Genin work in teams of three under a jōnin, and that teacher may give them a test of their own: Kakashi uses the bells to see whether his team puts the group ahead of the individual, and warns that whoever fails goes back to the Academy. Genin mostly take D- and C-rank missions.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-8","pos":8},{"h":"Chūnin","t":"To be promoted to chūnin, one has to pass the exam the villages organize. What is judged is not winning fights but showing the judgment to lead others: that is why Shikamaru is the only one of his generation promoted after the Konoha exam, even though he gave up against Temari. Chūnin can lead small teams and take on riskier missions, and many serve in the village, like Iruka, who teaches at the Academy. They wear the tactical vest jōnin wear too.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-172","pos":172},{"h":"Jōnin and special jōnin","t":"Jōnin are elite ninja: they lead high-risk missions and guide teams of genin, like Kakashi, Guy, Asuma and Kurenai. Promotion does not depend on age; Kakashi celebrates his as a child, in the middle of the war, just before the Kannabi Bridge mission. Between the two levels are the special jōnin, who reach that grade in a specific field without the full training: Ibiki in interrogation, Anko, Hayate or Genma as Chūnin Exam proctors, and Ebisu as a tutor. Their ranks are mostly spelled out in the official guides.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-239","pos":239},{"h":"Off the ladder","t":"Some posts do not follow this ladder. ANBU answers directly to the Kage and recruits by talent, not rank. The Kage is the village leader and usually comes from among its best ninja. Other positions, like councillors or clan heads, carry political weight without being ranks. And rank does not measure strength: many of the work's most dangerous ninja are rogues without a grade, and Naruto faces Kage-level threats for years while still a genin.","lvl":0},{"h":"Three years later","t":"Back from his training with Jiraiya, Naruto discovers that all his classmates are now chūnin while he is still a genin; Neji is even a jōnin. The manga does not show how those promotions came about. The anime tells it in a filler arc about a joint Konoha and Suna exam, at the end of which Tsunade makes the Leaf candidates chūnin and Neji a jōnin. Naruto never earns a formal promotion during the story, despite everything he achieves.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-247","ep":"shippuden-413","pos":247},{"h":"In the Boruto era","t":"The system is still in force. Konohamaru is a jōnin and the teacher of the team of Boruto, Sarada and Mitsuki, and the Chūnin Exams are still the path to promotion. In the anime, Shikadai is the only one promoted after the exam interrupted by the Ōtsutsuki, as happened to his father, and in a later exam Sarada and Denki, among others, move up. Boruto remains a genin: he is disqualified in both exams. In the manga, ranks are barely discussed: what matters is the Ōtsutsuki threat.","lvl":2,"ep":"boruto-226","pos":758}],"characters":["naruto","iruka","kakashi","shikamaru","ibiki","anko","hayate","genma","ebisu","neji","konohamaru"],"related":["examenes-chunin","rangos-de-mision","kage","anbu","konoha-aldea","maestros-konoha"],"reference":"Naruto, chapters 1–8, 172, 239 and 247; Shippūden, episodes 394–413; Boruto, episodes 112 and 220–226.","sources":[{"title":"Guía oficial de anime: Naruto y Shippuden","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/anime"},{"title":"Kakashi: el Sharingan recibido y la enseñanza del Chidori","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/news/01_1903"},{"title":"Shikamaru: sombras, Shikaku e Ino–Shika–Chō","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/news/01_1910"}],"figures":[]}
