Yamato later discovers the real order hidden in Sai's picture book: to assassinate Sasuke. The double game shows Root's style, which will strike a deal with a declared enemy if it suits it. What the mission does not foresee is the bond Sai starts to form with Naruto and Sakura. Instead of carrying it out, he chooses to help Naruto reach Sasuke, and on returning he asks Danzō to stay on Team 7 even though he failed. Sai uses a code name, and his only tie is Shin, a comrade he called brother though they shared no blood. When Naruto and Sakura ask him about Danzō, Sai cannot answer: he carries a seal on his tongue that prevents him from speaking about his boss and the organization. The seal guarantees secrecy even if an agent switches sides. Shin later returns as a revived soldier of the Impure World Reincarnation, and Sai recognizes him in the middle of the battlefield. With her in a coma, the feudal lord names him Sixth Hokage, and Root starts operating almost in the open: Danzō orders Sasuke eliminated if he shows up and has Sai keep watch on Naruto. He travels to the Five Kage Summit with two Root bodyguards, Fū Yamanaka and Torune Aburame, while other agents track Naruto along the way. Later, facing Sasuke, Danzō uncovers his right arm: a graft with Hashirama's cells and a row of Sharingan that lets him use Wood Style and chain Izanagi. Sasuke beats him when he runs out of eyes, and Danzō dies activating a seal to take his enemies with him. Danzō forced Nonō, the woman who raised him at the orphanage, to work as a spy, and recruited the boy for the same trade. Years later the organization manipulated them into fighting without recognizing each other, and that deception pushed Kabuto toward Orochimaru. The anime adds the story of Kinoe, the only survivor of an experiment with Hashirama's cells: Hiruzen takes him out of Root and sends him to Kakashi's ANBU under the name Tenzō, who will later be Yamato. The trail leads to Sumire Kakei, heir to a plan of Danzō's that her family kept alive, and to the creature Nue.
