The common ones are small, and several are carried in the vest or a pouch; the large ones are worn on the back. Besides serving for written orders or reports, they can hold seals that store objects and release them when activated, which lets the user carry many weapons or puppets without having them in view. They are also used to summon creatures, people and techniques stored in advance. A scroll only releases what was sealed into it beforehand: the variety of the attack depends on the user's inventory and training, and it does not create weapons out of nothing.","lvl":0},{"h":"Scrolls that drive the story","t":"From the first chapter, a scroll sets the plot in motion: Mizuki tricks Naruto into stealing the Scroll of Seals, and from it Naruto learns the Shadow Clone Jutsu. In the second test of the Chūnin Exams, each team receives a Heaven or Earth scroll and has to get the other one without opening them. Kabuto stops Naruto from peeking at his, and when Team 7 reaches the tower and opens them, the seal summons Iruka, who congratulates them and explains the chūnin motto. Scrolls work as the goal, the trap and the message all at once.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-64","ep":"naruto-37","pos":64},{"h":"Tenten and her arsenal","t":"Tenten is Part I's great specialist. In the Chūnin Exam preliminaries she faces Temari with the Rising Twin Dragons: she opens two scrolls that spiral around her while she leaps between them and draws out a rain of weapons, which she throws and steers with wires. The problem is her opponent: Temari scatters everything with her fan, and Tenten is defeated without ever touching her. The match makes the storage scroll's rule clear: it stores and releases, but guarantees nothing if the opponent has an answer for everything that comes out of it.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-73","ep":"naruto-43","pos":73},{"h":"Puppets, ink and clones","t":"In Part II, the scroll becomes the backbone of entire styles. Kankurō keeps his puppets in scrolls and brings them out when he faces Sasori to rescue Gaara. Sai uses a scroll as a canvas: he draws animals in ink and brings them to life, like the lion that attacks Naruto and Chōji the first time they meet. Suigetsu receives a scroll from Sasuke to summon Manda. And in Pain's invasion, Naruto leaves clones gathering natural energy on Mount Myōboku; when his Sage Mode runs out, Fukasaku summons them with a scroll and Naruto regains the power by dispelling them.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-433","pos":433},{"h":"Secrets and modern tools","t":"A scroll can also be a dangerous secret: in the Fourth War, Kisame hides one full of information inside a shark so it will not fall into Konoha's hands. In the Boruto era, the principle adapts to technology: the shinobi gauntlet, or kote, stores techniques in scrolls shrunk to the size of a pill and releases them without spending chakra, something Konoha's scientific weapons team presents as progress and many veteran ninja view with distrust. The tool changes shape, but it is still the same: a place to keep something for later use.","lvl":2}],"characters":["tenten","kankuro","sai"],"related":["fuinjutsu","invocaciones","marionetas","tinta"],"reference":"Naruto, chapters 75–77 (Tenten against Temari) and the Gaara rescue arc (Kankurō).","sources":[{"title":"Guía oficial de anime: Naruto y Shippuden","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/anime"}],"figures":[]}
