Its pattern no longer shows three separate tomoe, but a fixed design of its own. With it he traps Kakashi in Tsukuyomi, an illusion where Itachi controls time and space, and leaves Sasuke shattered with the same technique. As he escapes, he clears a path with Amaterasu, black flames that burn almost anything. Kakashi, who knows the clan, recognizes the eye as a higher form of the Sharingan that very few Uchiha ever awakened.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-148","pos":148},{"h":"Advice from Itachi","t":"Itachi tells Sasuke that to obtain the same eye he must kill his best friend, as he claims to have done. That line is the source of the most repeated idea about the Mangekyō, and it weighs on Sasuke through the whole first part: at the Valley of the End he has Naruto at his mercy and chooses not to kill him, because he does not want to gain power by following the path his brother laid out. The line is best read for what it is at that moment, the word of an enemy trying to provoke hatred, and not as a proven rule about the eye.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-238","pos":238},{"h":"How it really awakens","t":"The real condition is extreme emotional shock, almost always the death of someone very close. Killing a friend is one way to cause it, but neither the only one nor the usual one. Sasuke awakens it without having killed Naruto, after Itachi's death and the revelation of the truth about the clan massacre. His pattern is his own and different from his brother's. That awakening shows that the eye responds to pain, not to a ritual, and that Itachi's words had other motives, which become clear once his whole story is known.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-402","pos":402},{"h":"The price: pain and blindness","t":"Every use of the Mangekyō costs a lot of chakra and punishes its bearer. Itachi bleeds from the eye after Amaterasu and reaches his last fights badly worn down, his sight getting worse and worse. The clan's history as it is told to Sasuke makes it clear: sight fades with use and ends in blindness, with no fixed number of allowed uses. Madara faced that same limit. That degeneration is what makes the eye so dangerous and explains why the Uchiha looked for a way out, a solution that comes with a cost of its own.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-386","pos":386},{"h":"Each eye, its own techniques","t":"Every Mangekyō has a personal pattern and abilities. Itachi uses Tsukuyomi in one eye and Amaterasu in the other. Sasuke awakens his own with a design of his own, uses Amaterasu against Killer B and develops Kagutsuchi, a way of controlling and shaping the black flames as Blaze Release. With both eyes awakened comes Susanoo, a chakra warrior that surrounds the user, which both Itachi and Sasuke come to use. The pattern is neither chosen nor inherited: it reflects who awakened it and the circumstances in which they did.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-465","pos":465},{"h":"Shisui, Obito and Kakashi","t":"Shisui Uchiha had Kotoamatsukami, a genjutsu able to change someone's will without them noticing; one of his eyes ends up in Danzō's hands and the other serves Itachi even after his death. Obito awakens the Mangekyō on watching Rin die, and Kakashi awakens it at that same instant with the eye Obito had given him. Both eyes share the same dimension through Kamui, although each applies it differently. Kakashi's case shows that a transplanted eye can reach the Mangekyō and that the ability travels with the eye, not with the blood. The anime adds Fugaku, father of Itachi and Sasuke, with a Mangekyō of his own, something the manga does not show.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-606","pos":606},{"h":"Sarada and Ōhirume","t":"In Two Blue Vortex, Sarada awakens her own Mangekyō, tied to her anguish over Boruto after Omnipotence, and reveals it against Ryū. Her ability, Ōhirume, creates an orb that warps space and swallows her rival's iron sand, which lets her defeat him. The cost soon shows: overuse hurts her, her sight deteriorates and she needs stronger glasses, until Himawari helps her recover. The usual rule holds: a new eye with techniques of its own and a physical price that grows with every use.","lvl":3}],"characters":["itachi","sasuke","obito","shisui"],"related":["eterno","susanoo","kamui","kotoamatsukami","taka"],"reference":"Naruto, chapters 386, 402–403 and 605.
