Orochimaru keeps a legendary sword that he draws from his mouth, through a snake that opens its own mouth and hands him the blade. Sasuke, by contrast, carries a chokutō, a straight single-edged sword hidden in a sheathed staff, which he also calls Kusanagi. They share a name, not a history or properties: Sasuke's does not extend like Orochimaru's or cut almost anything on its own. Its electric edge depends on Sasuke's lightning chakra, not on the blade. In Part II, moreover, Orochimaru's fails to pierce Naruto's four-tailed form and returns to its owner turned into a small snake.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-308","pos":308},{"h":"Sasuke's chokutō","t":"After the time skip, Sasuke appears with his new sword in Orochimaru's hideout and uses it against his former teammates: he runs Yamato through with it and combines the edge with Chidori Current, which sends electricity through his whole body. Channeling lightning chakra through the blade, the vibration makes it far sharper, extends its reach and paralyzes whoever it pierces. The white sheath bears a small Uchiha crest on each side. It is his main weapon throughout Part II, in duels such as the one against Killer B, where his sword techniques clash with the jinchūriki's seven-sword style.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-411","pos":411},{"h":"The end of both swords","t":"Orochimaru's Kusanagi is sealed away along with him when Itachi traps him with the Totsuka Blade; although Orochimaru returns later, it is unclear what happens to the weapon. Sasuke's chokutō has another fate: in the Fourth War, the revived Itachi wields it briefly to fight at his side against Kabuto, and later Madara runs Sasuke through with that same sword and leaves him at death's door. Sasuke loses it during the war, and the sheath is destroyed afterward, in the fight inside Kaguya's dimensions.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-690","pos":690},{"h":"Trivia","t":"In Japanese mythology, the Kusanagi no Tsurugi is one of the three imperial regalia, along with the Yata mirror and the Yasakani jewel. According to legend, the god Susanoo found it inside the tail of Yamata no Orochi, the eight-headed serpent, after killing it. The series plays with that myth: Orochimaru, whose name recalls the serpent, has the sword; his final giant form has eight heads; and Itachi's Susanoo defeats him. In the manga Orochimaru's Kusanagi is a katana, while the anime draws it as a straight Chinese-style sword.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-392","pos":392},{"h":"In the Boruto era","t":"Years after the war, Sasuke carries a sword of the same style again, which he keeps using on his travels and in his fights in the Boruto era. As before, its power comes from lightning chakra and his skill, not from any special property of the blade. The visual continuity is deliberate: the weapon is as much a part of Sasuke's image as his traveling cloak. The name “Kusanagi” stays, even though it no longer has any direct relation to Orochimaru's legendary sword.","lvl":2}],"characters":["sasuke","orochimaru"],"related":["chidori","raiton","orochimaru"],"reference":"Naruto, chapters 120–137 (Orochimaru against Hiruzen) and 344–360 (Sasuke after the time skip).","sources":[{"title":"Sasuke: la verdad sobre Itachi y un nuevo camino","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/news/01_1858"}],"figures":[]}
