Naruto is the jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails, the nine-tailed fox that attacked Konoha the day he was born, though he does not know it until Mizuki reveals it to him. The seal does not turn the person into the beast: they are two different beings sharing one body, though the village often treats them as the same. Naruto is not the only one. Gaara of the Sand carries Shukaku, the one-tailed beast, sealed inside him, and his childhood was marked by loneliness and others' fear. When they face each other, Naruto recognizes in him a life much like his own.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-130","pos":130},{"h":"Extraction is fatal","t":"Chiyo explains that if a tailed beast is extracted from a jinchūriki, the host dies. That is why the Akatsuki hunt the jinchūriki of every village, who come from very different clans and places and carry different beasts. Chiyo herself confesses that she was the one who sealed Shukaku into Gaara and doubts she did the right thing. The relationship between host and beast depends a great deal on the seal, the village and how each society treats whoever carries that beast, almost always with fear and isolation.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-262","pos":262},{"h":"Mito, Kushina and Naruto","t":"Kushina reveals she was the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki before Naruto, and that before her it was Mito Uzumaki, Hashirama's wife. That chain is a handing over of responsibility between hosts, not a confirmed line of mothers and daughters. Kushina survives the fox's extraction for a time thanks to exceptional vitality: it is an exception, not a general Uzumaki immunity. Minato seals the fox's yin half into himself and the yang half into Naruto, and both parents die protecting their son.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-504","pos":504},{"h":"Cooperating with the beast","t":"Killer B, the Eight-Tails' jinchūriki, shows that a host can get along with their tailed beast. He explains that a jinchūriki needs “suns” to guide them, people who accept them, and that Naruto's are his parents. Over time, Naruto learns the fox's name, Kurama, and in the tailed beasts' minds he discovers the names of all of them and of their hosts. With Kurama's cooperation he reaches Tailed Beast Mode. The relationship stops being one of prison and jailer and becomes an alliance between two beings.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-572","pos":572},{"h":"The Ten-Tails","t":"In the war, Obito seals the Ten-Tails into his body and becomes its jinchūriki, until the Alliance rips the tailed beasts out of him. Later, Madara extracts Kurama from Naruto, which should kill him. Naruto survives because Minato transfers to him the fox's yin half he kept in his own body, and with it he gets Kurama back. Madara also ends up becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki. This stage shows both the limits of the general rule and the price of containing the power of every beast.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-673","pos":673},{"h":"Naruto without Kurama","t":"In Boruto, Naruto turns to Baryon Mode to face Isshiki. That form consumes Kurama's life in exchange for enormous power, and the fox dies after the battle. Naruto thus stops being a jinchūriki: he loses the extra chakra reserve and the companion he had lived with since birth. The other tailed beasts remain sealed in their hosts, but Naruto is in a new situation, weaker than before and forced to fight without the fox that was with him all his life.","lvl":2,"ch":"boruto-55","pos":755},{"h":"Himawari and Kurama","t":"In Two Blue Vortex, Kurama is reborn inside Himawari, who becomes a new jinchūriki. She starts using the fox's chakra in combat and even prepares a Tailed Beast Bomb. Her case is not the same as inheriting Baryon Mode or receiving her father's powers: it is a new bond, with a reborn Kurama and a host still learning to live with it. Being a jinchūriki keeps changing depending on the era and the person.","lvl":3}],"characters":["mito","kushina","naruto"],"related":["kurama","fuinjutsu","uzumaki","kirigakure","kumogakure","iwagakure","uzushiogakure","guerras-ninja"],"reference":"Naruto, chapters 500–504 and 570–571: the Nine-Tails' hosts and cooperation.","sources":[{"title":"Kushina: Uzushiogakure, Mito y la familia de Naruto","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/news/01_1833"},{"title":"Naruto: formación y vínculos, primera parte","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/news/01_1610"}],"figures":["<figure class=\"technique-figure\" data-illustration=\"nueve-colas\"><div class=\"illustration-art\"><svg class=\"technique-svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 460 240\" xmlns=\"http://www.w3.org/2000/svg\" role=\"img\" aria-label=\"A nine-tailed fox drawn with original shapes appears beside a human figure.\"><rect width=\"460\" height=\"240\" rx=\"8\" fill=\"#151520\"/><path d=\"M0 60h460M0 120h460M0 180h460M115 0v240M230 0v240M345 0v240\" stroke=\"#b99bbd\" stroke-opacity=\".05\"/><circle cx=\"230\" cy=\"120\" r=\"102\" fill=\"#b99bbd\" fill-opacity=\".025\"/><g class=\"fx-art\"><g fill=\"#b9684222\" stroke=\"#d68f5e\" stroke-width=\"1.5\"><path d=\"M288 165Q157.0062359353936 176.76924265535752 181.0062359353936 154.76924265535752Q201.0062359353936 194.76924265535752 302 171Z\"/><path d=\"M288 165Q165.47968604223348 133.52270798886175 189.47968604223348 111.52270798886175Q209.47968604223348 151.52270798886175 302 171Z\"/><path d=\"M288 165Q188.7491021455561 96.95585666660038 212.7491021455561 74.95585666660038Q232.7491021455561 114.95585666660038 302 171Z\"/><path d=\"M288 165Q223.31983958182173 72.56036717626631 247.31983958182173 50.56036717626631Q267.3198395818217 90.56036717626631 302 171Z\"/><path d=\"M288 165Q264 64 288 42Q308 82 302 171Z\"/><path d=\"M288 165Q304.6801604181783 72.56036717626631 328.6801604181783 50.56036717626631Q348.6801604181783 90.56036717626631 302 171Z\"/><path d=\"M288 165Q339.2508978544439 96.95585666660038 363.2508978544439 74.95585666660038Q383.2508978544439 114.95585666660038 302 171Z\"/><path d=\"M288 165Q362.5203139577665 133.52270798886175 386.5203139577665 111.52270798886175Q406.5203139577665 151.52270798886175 302 171Z\"/><path d=\"M288 165Q370.9937640646064 176.76924265535752 394.9937640646064 154.76924265535752Q414.9937640646064 194.76924265535752 302 171Z\"/><path d=\"m246 133-10-55 29 20 40-1 33-23-10 63-38 42Z\" fill=\"#d58b55\"/><path d=\"m259 120 17 7-11 5m34-5 18-7-7 12m-38 13 18 9 14-12\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"#392b37\" stroke-width=\"3\"/></g><g class=\"fx-actor\"><g transform=\"translate(90 119) scale(1)\" stroke=\"#dfc19c\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"><path d=\"m-8 19-6 20-9 12h12l12-22 6 21h12L8 20Z\" fill=\"#272b3c\"/><path d=\"m-12-10-11 8-7 20 7 4 10-17 4 8h18l4-8 9 17 7-4L20-2 10-10Z\" fill=\"#32374b\"/><path d=\"m-11-10 11 8 10-8-2 29H-8Z\" fill=\"#dfc19c\" fill-opacity=\".3\"/><path d=\"M-8-30q7-8 16 0v13l-8 8-8-8Z\" fill=\"#ccb2a8\"/><path d=\"m-10-26-2-10 6 1 5-5 5 5 7-1 2 11-6-5-7 3-6-3Z\" fill=\"#222436\"/><path d=\"M-9-25H9\" stroke-width=\"3\"/><path d=\"m-4-20 2 0m5 0h2M-9 16H9m-25 28h7m15 0h8\" fill=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1.2\"/></g></g><path class=\"fx-arrow\" pathLength=\"1\" d=\"M133 122L196 122m-7.794228634059948 -4.499999999999999L196 122l-7.794228634059948 4.499999999999999\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"#d68f5e\" stroke-width=\"2\" stroke-linecap=\"round\"/><text class=\"fx-label\" x=\"90\" y=\"211\" text-anchor=\"middle\" fill=\"#d6c6df\" font-size=\"12\" font-family=\"sans-serif\" letter-spacing=\"1\">HOST</text><text class=\"fx-label\" x=\"290\" y=\"211\" text-anchor=\"middle\" fill=\"#d6c6df\" font-size=\"12\" font-family=\"sans-serif\" letter-spacing=\"1\">BEAST · ITS OWN WILL</text></g></svg><button class=\"illustration-open\" data-enlarge=\"nueve-colas\" aria-label=\"Enlarge illustration of The fox and its host\"><span class=\"illustration-zoom\">Enlarge ↗</span></button></div><figcaption><strong data-title=\"The fox and its host\">The fox and its host · Original diagram</strong><span>A conceptual take on the bond with the Nine-Tailed Fox, not an exact transformation of Naruto or a hereditary Uzumaki ability.</span></figcaption></figure>"]}
