It was an isolated clan living underground in the Land of Fire. Its members could turn into smoke at will and still touch and interact with their surroundings. The ability was imperfect: sometimes they transformed without meaning to, and in smoke form the wind could scatter them forever and kill them. That is why they lived short lives shut away in caves where the air barely moved. Instead of headstones, they planted trees for their dead, believing their souls would watch over them.","lvl":1,"ep":"shippuden-352","pos":648},{"h":"Kinoe and Yukimi","t":"Danzō sends Kinoe, the future Yamato, to support Orochimaru's escape from Konoha. On the mission he meets the Iburi clan, led by Gotta, and little Yukimi, who thinks she recognizes in him Tenzō, her lost brother. Kinoe is not her biological brother and they are not related: it is the illusion of a girl who lost someone dear. Even so, the bond with her makes him question his role in Root. Kakashi reaches the hideout and Kinoe protects him, and afterward he decides to flee with Yukimi to a nearby town.","lvl":1,"ep":"shippuden-353","pos":648},{"h":"Orochimaru and the experiments","t":"Orochimaru had found the clan earlier and used his curse seals to partly stabilize their transformation. On the pretext that he needed to continue his research, the Iburi willingly handed several children over to him as test subjects, since the ability is stronger the younger the user. Wounded by Kakashi, Orochimaru takes refuge in the clan's hideout and Yukimi falls into his hands. Kakashi and Kinoe rescue her with Wood Style, and the three part ways agreeing to report nothing about the clan, a pact that protects the Iburi from Konoha and from Root.","lvl":1,"ep":"shippuden-354","pos":648},{"h":"What the arc leaves","t":"The Iburi arc, with the name Tenzō in the middle of it, serves to show the moment Kinoe begins to drift away from Danzō and to trust Kakashi. The clan works as a mirror of his story: children handed over to Orochimaru for promises of power, just as Kinoe himself was used in his experiments with Hashirama's cells. The name “Iburi” comes from a Japanese word meaning to smoke. Outside this anime arc, the clan never again carries weight in the story.","lvl":1,"ep":"shippuden-354","pos":648}],"characters":["yukimi","gotta"],"related":["chakra"],"reference":"Official series and chapter guides as reading context.
