The most common kind folds: it is carried closed, like a packet of metal sheets, and snapped open just before throwing, which allows its reach to take an opponent by surprise. That is why it is also called the “windmill of shadows”. Its name refers to the Fūma clan, credited with this kind of weapon, though in the series people of many origins use it. Not all of them fold: straight-bladed ones do not close, and even Toroi's giant square stars count as part of this family.","lvl":0},{"h":"Mizuki and Iruka","t":"It is the first big weapon to appear in the series. On the night of the Scroll of Seals, Mizuki reveals he tricked Naruto and hurls a giant straight-bladed shuriken at him. Iruka steps in and takes it in the back to protect him, and in that moment tells him he recognizes him as someone who matters. Later, Mizuki tries the attack again and Naruto stops him with hundreds of shadow clones. From the very first chapter the scene sets two ideas the series repeats often: the weapon does not decide who wins, and the bond between teacher and student can outweigh any technique.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-1","ep":"naruto-1","pos":1},{"h":"The plan against Zabuza","t":"In the Land of Waves, with Kakashi trapped in the water prison, Sasuke unfolds a Fūma shuriken and throws it at the real Zabuza. Zabuza catches it with his free hand, but another was coming behind, hidden in the first one's shadow; he dodges it with a jump, and that second shuriken turns out to be Naruto transformed, who throws a kunai and forces Zabuza to release the prison. The plan works because neither of them says it out loud: Naruto passes the shuriken to Sasuke and he gets the idea instantly. Its size, which usually makes it visible and slow to set up, here becomes an advantage: it hides what comes behind.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-14","ep":"naruto-8","pos":14},{"h":"More advanced tricks","t":"Its size makes it predictable, so it works better as a feint or combined with another technique than as a direct attack on an alert opponent. Zabuza and Obito also use it in close combat, spinning it in the hand like a blade. In the duel against Itachi, Sasuke sets up a tricky variant: he ties wire to the blades and, with a pull, separates them in midflight so they shoot off in different directions; he can also charge them with Chidori's electric chakra to sharpen them. In the Fourth War, Obito carries a big straight-bladed shuriken, and Tenten and Hiruzen also turn to giant stars.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-389","pos":389},{"h":"Trivia","t":"The Fūma shuriken's shape turns up in unexpected places. Naruto's Rasenshuriken has its silhouette, and the design of Obito's Mangekyō Sharingan is a three-bladed pinwheel that also recalls this weapon; in fact, one of his techniques is called Kamui Shuriken. Kumogakure's Toroi takes the idea to the opposite extreme: his giant square stars neither fold nor spin like blades, but they are also classed in this family. The name “fūma” is written with the kanji for “wind” and “demon”, and is usually translated as “demon wind shuriken”.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-599","pos":599}],"characters":["sasuke","mizuki","tenten"],"related":["shuriken","kunai","kage-bunshin"],"reference":"Naruto, chapter 1 (Mizuki and Iruka) and chapters 15–16 (Sasuke against Zabuza).","sources":[{"title":"Guía oficial de anime: Naruto y Shippuden","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/anime"}],"figures":[]}
