At the end of the second test, the Third Hokage explains the exam's real purpose: it is a substitute for war between countries, a showcase where each village displays its strength to clients and rivals and puts its prestige on the line. That is why several villages organize it together and the final matches have an audience, feudal lords included. The host village rotates among the allies.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-65","pos":65},{"h":"First and second tests","t":"In Konoha, Ibiki Morino runs a written exam with nearly impossible questions: what is really measured is the ability to gather information without being caught, and the tenth question tests the courage to go on in the face of the unknown. Anko Mitarashi runs the second test in the Forest of Death: each team receives a Heaven or Earth scroll, must get the other and reach the central tower within five days. That is where Orochimaru appears and marks Sasuke.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-64","pos":64},{"h":"Preliminaries and finals","t":"Since too many candidates pass, Hayate Gekkō organizes individual preliminary matches. The winners have a month to prepare for the finals, held in a stadium with Genma as referee. That round features Naruto against Neji and Shikamaru against Temari, among others. The match between Sasuke and Gaara serves as the signal for the Sand and Sound invasion, and the exam is cut short. Most of the Sand and Sound participants knew nothing of the plan.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-115","pos":115},{"h":"The outcome","t":"The judges do not promote whoever wins the most matches, but whoever shows the aptitude to be a chūnin. After the invasion, Shikamaru is the only one of his generation promoted: he lost by giving up against Temari, but showed the analysis and prudence of a leader. Naruto, who beat Neji, remains a genin. In the anime the promotion is shown in episode 107. The decision makes clear that the exam rewards judgment in command over brute strength.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-172","ep":"naruto-107","pos":172},{"h":"Later editions","t":"In Shippūden the manga only mentions in passing that Shikamaru is busy organizing an exam. The anime develops a joint Konoha and Suna exam in a filler arc: Shikamaru and Temari supervise the written test, the second takes place in a desert, and Fū, the Seven-Tails' jinchūriki, takes part under a hidden identity. A plot to steal Shukaku interrupts the finals, and Tsunade promotes the Leaf candidates anyway.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-283","ep":"shippuden-413","pos":283},{"h":"Boruto's exam","t":"In the Boruto era the written test revolves around an ink trap and the second stage is a flag-capture game. Boruto secretly uses Katasuke's scientific gauntlet, first against the Mist triplets and then in the final against Shikadai. Naruto discovers it, comes down into the arena and disqualifies him in front of everyone. At that moment Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki burst into the stadium. In the anime, Shikadai is later the only one promoted, like his father.","lvl":2,"ch":"boruto-5","pos":705},{"h":"A second attempt in the anime","t":"The Boruto anime adds another exam. After the written test, the candidates must rescue ten ninja in the Forest of Death; Boruto falls behind to save another candidate but still reaches the finals.
