During the invasion of Konoha, Orochimaru summons three coffins in front of the Third Hokage and resurrects the First and the Second; he drives a talisman into their heads to cancel their will. The resurrected bodies regenerate endlessly, so beating them down is not enough. Hiruzen ends up using the Reaper Death Seal to take their souls, and discovers that Orochimaru used Zaku and Kin as sacrifices: the technique needs a living body for each resurrection.","pos":123},{"h":"Kabuto's version","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-524","t":"Kabuto perfects the technique for the Fourth Ninja War and resurrects an army of dead ninja. He demonstrates how it works using Torune and Fū of Root as sacrifices, explains how it can be stopped and, when he sees some of the resurrected hesitate, erases the personality of Zabuza, Haku and others so they fight without wavering. His control is not identical to Orochimaru's: he decides how much of their consciousness each one keeps. Since the bodies regenerate, the Alliance learns to immobilize and seal them, as happens with Zabuza and Haku.","pos":524},{"h":"Itachi, Nagato and the release","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-592","t":"The technique has exceptions. Itachi, resurrected, breaks free of the control thanks to a crow with Kotoamatsukami that he had left ready for Naruto, and seals Nagato with the Sword of Totsuka. Then he goes after Kabuto with Sasuke, traps him in Izanami and forces him to undo the Reanimation Jutsu: the resurrected begin to vanish. But Madara, who knew how to free himself from the control, stays on the battlefield. The release shows that the technique has precise rules and that some users know how to exploit them.","pos":592},{"h":"The resurrected Hokage","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-619","t":"Orochimaru uses the technique again so Sasuke can talk with those who know the village's history. First he recovers the souls sealed by the Death God using a mask from the Uzumaki shrine, then he resurrects the first four Hokage. Tobirama, the creator of the Reanimation Jutsu, criticizes using it this way and makes clear the technique does not restore a normal life: the resurrected are bodies sustained by the technique. This time, though, the Hokage keep their consciousness and decide to join the war.","pos":619},{"h":"What it is not","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-691","t":"The Reanimation Jutsu does not restore full life. Madara, for example, only stops being a reanimated body when Obito uses Samsara of Heavenly Life to truly revive him. At the end of the war, the Hokage and the other resurrected say goodbye and their souls return to the afterlife. Nor should the technique be confused with the reincarnation of Indra and Asura, which has to do with chakra passing from generation to generation, not with bodies sustained by a sacrifice. This entry describes how it works in the story, not a ritual formula.","pos":691}],"characters":["tobirama","hashirama","hiruzen","madara","itachi"],"related":["senju","reencarnacion","fuinjutsu","amegakure","otogakure","alianza-shinobi","experimentos-de-orochimaru","guerras-ninja"],"reference":"Naruto, chapters 117–123, 520–521 and 589–591: the technique, conditions and exceptions.","sources":[{"title":"Hashirama: Butsuma, Mito y la fundación de Konoha","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/news/01_1627"},{"title":"Itachi: familia, ANBU y la tragedia del clan","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/news/01_1814"}],"figures":["<figure class=\"technique-figure\" data-illustration=\"edo-tensei\"><div class=\"illustration-art\"><svg class=\"technique-svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 460 240\" xmlns=\"http://www.w3.org/2000/svg\" role=\"img\" aria-label=\"A conceptual silhouette appears in a reanimation frame, separated from the user by an arrow.\"><rect width=\"460\" height=\"240\" rx=\"8\" fill=\"#151520\"/><path d=\"M0 60h460M0 120h460M0 180h460M115 0v240M230 0v240M345 0v240\" stroke=\"#b99bbd\" stroke-opacity=\".05\"/><circle cx=\"230\" cy=\"120\" r=\"102\" fill=\"#b99bbd\" fill-opacity=\".025\"/><g class=\"fx-art\"><g class=\"fx-actor\"><g transform=\"translate(92 120) scale(1)\" stroke=\"#b9bbce\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"><path d=\"m-8 19-6 20-9 12h12l12-22 6 21h12L8 20Z\" fill=\"#272b3c\"/><path d=\"m-12-10-11 8-7 20 7 4 10-17 4 8h18l4-8 9 17 7-4L20-2 10-10Z\" fill=\"#32374b\"/><path d=\"m-11-10 11 8 10-8-2 29H-8Z\" fill=\"#b9bbce\" fill-opacity=\".3\"/><path d=\"M-8-30q7-8 16 0v13l-8 8-8-8Z\" fill=\"#ccb2a8\"/><path d=\"m-10-26-2-10 6 1 5-5 5 5 7-1 2 11-6-5-7 3-6-3Z\" fill=\"#222436\"/><path d=\"M-9-25H9\" stroke-width=\"3\"/><path d=\"m-4-20 2 0m5 0h2M-9 16H9m-25 28h7m15 0h8\" fill=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1.2\"/></g></g><rect x=\"286\" y=\"51\" width=\"84\" height=\"137\" rx=\"9\" fill=\"#a89dbd18\" stroke=\"#bcb0d1\" stroke-width=\"2\"/><g class=\"fx-actor\"><g transform=\"translate(328 117) scale(0.8)\" stroke=\"#bcb0d1\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"><path d=\"m-8 19-6 20-9 12h12l12-22 6 21h12L8 20Z\" fill=\"#272b3c\"/><path d=\"m-12-10-11 8-7 20 7 4 10-17 4 8h18l4-8 9 17 7-4L20-2 10-10Z\" fill=\"#32374b\"/><path d=\"m-11-10 11 8 10-8-2 29H-8Z\" fill=\"#bcb0d1\" fill-opacity=\".3\"/><path d=\"M-8-30q7-8 16 0v13l-8 8-8-8Z\" fill=\"#ccb2a8\"/><path d=\"m-10-26-2-10 6 1 5-5 5 5 7-1 2 11-6-5-7 3-6-3Z\" fill=\"#222436\"/><path d=\"M-9-25H9\" stroke-width=\"3\"/><path d=\"m-4-20 2 0m5 0h2M-9 16H9m-25 28h7m15 0h8\" fill=\"none\" stroke-width=\"1.2\"/></g></g><path class=\"fx-arrow\" pathLength=\"1\" d=\"M157 113L266 113m-7.794228634059948 -4.499999999999999L266 113l-7.794228634059948 4.499999999999999\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"#bcb0d1\" stroke-width=\"2\" stroke-linecap=\"round\"/><path d=\"M287 190h83m-93 7h103\" stroke=\"#bcb0d1\" stroke-width=\"2\"/><text class=\"fx-label\" x=\"230\" y=\"219\" text-anchor=\"middle\" fill=\"#d6c6df\" font-size=\"12\" font-family=\"sans-serif\" letter-spacing=\"1\">REANIMATION ≠ REINCARNATION</text></g></svg><button class=\"illustration-open\" data-enlarge=\"edo-tensei\" aria-label=\"Enlarge illustration of Edo Tensei\"><span class=\"illustration-zoom\">Enlarge ↗</span></button></div><figcaption><strong data-title=\"Edo Tensei\">Edo Tensei · Original diagram</strong><span>Reanimation within the fiction.
