It has no connection to the Nine-Tails beyond the name. It is a Konoha family specializing in genjutsu thanks to a hereditary ability, and it was once among the village's most prominent clans, though its number of ninja has shrunk a great deal. Its mansion is in the mountains, far from the center. Her father asks the Third Hokage for a special tutor, and the one chosen is Kurenai, also a genjutsu expert. Yakumo dreams of being a kunoichi using only illusions, but Kurenai does not feel able to guide her and advises her to find another path. Later, on the Third Hokage's orders, Kurenai seals the girl's abilities. Yakumo takes it as a betrayal and grows up quiet and resentful. With that power one can kill with an illusion. The price is high: the user almost never controls it, and their subconscious regulates it by creating a second personality that ends up taking over. In the arc, Yakumo's genjutsu comes to envelop all of Konoha and makes everyone believe the village has been destroyed. Ido is the real reason for the seal Kurenai placed and the one responsible for the tragedy that befell her family, for which Yakumo had blamed her former teacher. When Yakumo threatens to erase Kurenai from existence, the truth comes out. Yakumo defeats Ido, understands that Kurenai always cared for her and that the seal was meant to protect her, and the teacher returns to Team 8.
