Inside he keeps sand infused with his own chakra, and the gourd itself is made of that sand, so he can break it down and re-form it whenever he wants. Everything he does in combat comes from it: walls to protect himself, sand arms to grab the opponent and the thin armor that coats him. In the Forest of Death a single scene shows its reach: he wraps Shigure and his Amegakure teammates in sand and crushes them without getting a drop of blood on himself.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-59","pos":59},{"h":"Shield, armor and sphere","t":"The sand shield moves on its own to stop whatever comes near, which is why Lee has to take off his weights to start getting through it. When he does, the second layer appears: sand armor that cushions the blows. Against the Reverse Lotus, Gaara uses the gourd's sand as a cushion to avoid crashing and then crushes Lee's arm and leg. In the final against Sasuke he shuts himself inside a sand sphere with a floating eye to watch from outside, but Chidori, combined with the speed Sasuke copied from Lee, pierces the shell and wounds him for the first time in his life.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-113","pos":113},{"h":"When the gourd is not enough","t":"The gourd provides ready-made material, but control of the sand depends on Gaara, not on the container. On terrain with natural sand he can use it, though with more effort, and where there is none he can grind the minerals in the ground with his own sand to make more. That secondary sand takes more chakra to handle. He shows it against Kimimaro: he catches him with sand and crushes him along with a chunk of terrain, builds his strongest defense against the bone drill, and ends up burying him under the ground he turned into sand.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-217","pos":217},{"h":"The Kazekage in Suna's sky","t":"As Fifth Kazekage, Gaara meets Deidara in the air above the village. His sand blocks every clay attack and crushes the attacker's left arm. When Deidara drops an enormous bomb on Suna, Gaara wraps it in a gigantic mass of sand and carries it away while the villagers, who feared him as a child, cheer him on. That defense leaves him exhausted, and he ends up captured. The scene shows the limit of his style: protecting everyone at once takes far more chakra than defending himself.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-249","pos":249},{"h":"Sand in the war","t":"In the Fourth War Gaara commands the Fourth Division, and sand becomes a tool on a military scale. The revived Fourth Kazekage is so surprised at the volume his son moves that he assumes Shukaku is doing it, though the tailed beast is no longer in his body. Later, Gaara stops the meteorite Madara drops on the Alliance together with Ōnoki, and in the final stretch he uses sand to catch and seal him. The gourd stays on his back, though for those volumes he needs the sand of the terrain.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-658","pos":658},{"h":"The adult's gourd","t":"From The Last on, the adult Gaara carries a smaller gourd, hung at his side instead of on his back. It is still his store of sand prepared for emergencies. In the Boruto anime's Sunagakure arc, original to the adaptation, Gaara uses up nearly all his chakra to catch and seal Urashiki Ōtsutsuki with sand, and has to let Kankurō take Shukaku to Konoha along with Boruto and Shinki.","lvl":2,"ep":"boruto-121","pos":711}],"characters":["gaara"],"related":["arena","suna","jinchuriki"],"reference":"Naruto, chapters 34–36 (introduction) and 80–85 (Gaara against Rock Lee).","sources":[{"title":"Guía oficial de anime: Naruto y Shippuden","url":"https://naruto-official.com/en/anime"}],"figures":[]}
