The Chūnin Exams show that the sand shields him by itself from any attack, even if he does not react, and that it also works for attacking: with Sand Coffin he wraps up his Rain opponents and crushes them without moving from his spot. The power of that sand is Gaara's; the stages where Shukaku takes over more belong to his personal story and are not a property of the technique itself.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-59","pos":59},{"h":"Armor, sphere and their cracks","t":"Besides the automatic shield, Gaara covers his body with a thin layer of sand that absorbs blows. Against Lee, the armor withstands the Reverse Lotus, but using it costs chakra and weighs him down. Facing Sasuke, Gaara shuts himself inside a compact sphere with a sand eye to watch from within. That is where the first clear limit shows: the shield depends on speed. Lee outpaces it once he takes off his weights, and Sasuke's Chidori pierces the sphere and wounds him.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-113","pos":113},{"h":"Volume and terrain","t":"Against Kimimaro, Gaara shows he does not depend only on the gourd: he grinds the rock of the ground and turns the terrain into sand, which lets him flood the field with a cascade and bury his opponent deep. Even so, Kimimaro survives thanks to his bones, and the fight only ends because of the illness that was already consuming him. The lesson is that sand scales with chakra and preparation time, but a very tough opponent can withstand the pressure.","lvl":0,"ch":"naruto-217","pos":217},{"h":"Kazekage, iron and gold","t":"As Kazekage, Gaara uses the desert sand to raise an enormous dome over Sunagakure and stops the bomb Deidara drops on the village. Protecting everyone leaves him exhausted and makes his capture easier. Kazekage is a village post, not a clan, and inheriting the title passes on no techniques: what Gaara does with sand is his own training and affinity. Suna has three styles that are often confused. The Third Kazekage magnetized iron sand, and Sasori turned him into a puppet to use that power. Rasa, the Fourth Kazekage, wielded gold dust, heavier than ordinary sand. Gaara moves ordinary sand with chakra. When Rasa appears reanimated in the war, gold mixed into Gaara's sand makes it too heavy and robs it of speed. They are different techniques even if they look alike at first glance.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-546","pos":546},{"h":"Uses in the Fourth War","t":"During the war, Gaara's sand detects Mū even while he is invisible, because it registers whoever passes through it. Against the Second Mizukage, oil mixes with the sand and neutralizes it. Its most spectacular use comes when Madara drops a meteorite: Gaara stops it with a colossal layer of sand, but a second meteorite is more than he can hold. Later he uses a sand seal to pin Madara down. The limit is still the same: available mass and chakra.","lvl":1,"ch":"naruto-561","pos":561},{"h":"Shinki and iron sand","t":"Shinki is Gaara's adopted son, not his biological one, and fights with iron sand: he forms spikes, arms and a figure that moves around him. In the Boruto anime he comes to Konoha for the Chūnin Exams and beats Chōchō with precise control of the iron. Sharing a village and an adoptive father with Gaara does not mean they inherit the same technique: his iron sand is closer to the Third Kazekage's than to ordinary sand.","lvl":2,"ep":"boruto-59","pos":704},{"h":"Suna against the Divine Trees","t":"In Two Blue Vortex, Gaara risks his life to protect Shinki's team when the Divine Trees reach the Land of Wind, and both are affected. Ryū then attacks Suna with iron-sand puppets, another form of the same material in enemy hands. Gaara and Shinki only return to normal once the team recovers the thorny bulbs. The scene shows that, years later, sand is above all a tool of protection for Gaara, and that iron sand can turn up again in enemy hands.","lvl":3,"ch":"tbv-25","pos":805}],"characters":["gaara","rasa","shinki","shukaku"],"related":["chakra"],"reference":"Reading guide for the series indicated.
