A female left on an enemy can be tracked by the males thanks to her scent, and other insects scout the terrain and come back with information. Since they make no noise or sudden movements, the Aburame are experts at espionage. Shino shows it in the Chūnin Exam: against Zaku he plugs his air tubes with insects until they burst, and against Kankurō he lets the fight look lost while his insects were already at work on the puppet and the puppeteer. According to that filler, the Kamizuru, bee users from Iwagakure, led an attempt to invade Konoha years ago and were defeated by the more experienced Aburame. Years later, when Team 8 looks for a bikōchū, an insect able to memorize and follow a scent, the last Kamizuru cross their path again. The search ends badly for everyone: Naruto accidentally makes the insect memorize his own scent. During Pain's attack, Shibi, Muta, Shino and another Aburame face Konan and use their insects to devour the paper she had wrapped several ninja in, while Katsuyu heals them. Earlier, in the search for Sasuke, Shino's insects manage to engulf Tobi, who escapes by vanishing. In the war, Muta and other clan members emit interference signals with their insects to confuse enemy sensors, a technique later combined with Kirigakure's mist. Torune, a member of Root and Danzō's escort along with Fū, uses rinkaichū, tiny venomous insects that a mere touch can pass on. Tobi neutralizes him during the Kage Summit, and later Kabuto resurrects him with the Reanimation Jutsu using Fū's body. Other known species of the clan are the kochū, with paralyzing venom, the shōkaichū, able to detect chakra, and the kidaichū, which grows out of control if fed the wrong amount of chakra. The seriousness and dark glasses are still the clan's hallmark, but the character becomes more approachable.
